Social Experiment: Purging Facebook “Friends”

So last night I decided it was time. Time to put and end to the madness, the quizzes, the nonsense, the “friends on my list that aren’t really my friends” game. What I decided to do was just… delete them all. Everyone. Then see how my “friend” list grows from there.

I think one thing as well, when I started Facebook, they didn’t have many of the features they do now. Friend lists were nonexistent, but they did have these “how do I know this person” feature, which now is subtly hidden or not even there at all.  What ensued was close to 500 people with no way to manage them. What if I want a picture album that only XYZ people can see? I need to create a list, but creating a list when you have no one in lists is a pain. Now I can create lists and when I add new friends I can add them to the lists then.

Also, the news feed. Filled with junk, or updates from people I don’t care about. Was getting sick of hiding people or updates, or quizzes, or whatever. I got to thinking, why do I have all these people on my friend list if I don’t care what they are updating? So I started to pair it down, remove people I don’t know, then people I haven’t talked to in real life, then people I haven’t talked to in years and when they got on FB they added me and I haven’t said anything to, then I said, well I will remove people I wouldn’t go have a beer with, then it just became a mess and I said whatever, I will remove everyone and start this experiment. Remove myself from all Groups and stop being a Fan of Sunshine, Campfires, and Not Having Swine Flu.

After removing a few people I wrote on my wall that I was removing everyone, and before I was even done getting through the purge process (you have to delete one by one by the way. Facebook makes it easy to add friends, pain to remove more than one at a time) someone had added me back. Cool. Then I twittered it, and a couple of friends added me back. Nice. So that’s where I am at, and if I stay there, then cool, if I add friend back, well then at least I will have them categorized as I go.

It’s funny now with few friends, how bad Facebook is at telling me who I should be friends with. It wants me to be friends with everyone from SCSU because I graduated there in 2002. Not good. Wondering though if it doesn’t recommend people I have removed? Hard to say.

Sometimes spring cleaning is fun, starting at zero, new.

Sorry State Of My Blogroll

Doing some “Fall Cleanup” type stuff, I decided to hit the links in my BlogRoll to see the last time some of them have been updated. Boy, surprised me.

What happened? I don’t know, but the state of most of my buddies blogs is in total neglect.

  • Aaron Ballman – updates regularly, really techie, mostly Real Basic stuff (Last post Sept 26th)
  • Aaron Weber – updates sometimes, some good content (Last post Sept 16th)
  • Adam Rudolph – updates sometimes – but his feed was jacked for the longest time (Last post Sept 8th)
  • Bill Zitomer – started off good and fell off (Last post Feb 16th)
  • Brad Gocken – totally ghandi (Last post Nov 7th 2007)
  • Brye Weis – blogspot site shut down – removed him, yikes
  • Chris Super – was going strong, but..was twittering strong for a while (Last post June 13th)
  • Chris Super Personal – pretty much done (Last post April 14th 2008)
  • Jeff Bollinger – site was down, he didn’t know, fixed now, but pretty much gone (Last post June 13th)
  • Jennifer Dammann – was going strong, neglected (Last post May 19th)
  • Joe Gay – a few posts and nothing (Last post Apr 28th)
  • Joel Dahlin – good stuff every once in a while (Last post July 30th)
  • Jon Shern – good stuff every now and then (Last: post Sept 4th)
  • Kyle Ohme – post every now and then – hey Kyle, your site is down now, and when it isn’t it is slow, and the text formatting is goofy – Last (unsure, cant get to site)
  • Michael Fransen – good quality stuff, in spurts :) (Last post Aug 21st)
  • Mickey Slater – brand new endeavor, good content (Last post Sept 23rd)
  • Reena – cant seem to pick a blog engine!! (Last post Jul 10th)

So there you have it, my blog roll.. most of them havent updated in months. What gives guys? I’m sure everyone has SOMETHING they can blog about. I know I don’t update that often, and I should post more, but some of you (Gocken?) are almost hitting a year with no updates!! let your knowledge out on the world, keep us up to date! I like to give the link love, but give me some content in return, something so we can have a conversation on this blogosphere of ours.

And feel free to get on my case when I don’t update :)

P.S. – if any of my friends reading this have a blog I don’t know about, let me know, I will subscribe and add you to the blog roll. But maybe if you update often you might not want me to add you, it seems to be a curse of blog neglect once you make the list – Mickey, don’t let the curse get you!

Facebook: Signing up can be tough if..

Your last name is “Gay”

I asked a buddy of mine, Joe Gay (yes that is his name), “why aren’t you on Facebook yet”, and his response was, “They won’t let me sign up, they won’t allow my last name”

What gives? That is his name, they should allow it. He shouldn’t have to email customer support to sign up.

So, what do we do? Put Gaaay instead Gay. That gets through. But in the process, accidentally picked the wrong year for his birthday.

Now, what is even better, is that you can’t update your name or birth year once you are logged in. Well not easily anyways. From the help page

Did you misspell your own name? Are you tired of that embarrassing nickname? You can request a change from the “Settings” tab on the Account page. For quality control purposes, we confirm all name changes before they take place.

But I suppose they will get bucky again about his last name

Same thing with the birth year

You can edit the month and day of your birth from the “Basic” tab of the Edit My Profile page. For security reasons, Facebook Customer Support reviews all requests for edits to your birth year. To submit a request, click here.

Facebook really should let users edit this information, instead of them having to send an email off to customer support, it just doesn’t make much sense.
