Same here...I've gone back and forth on using dedicated IM clients (Yahoo Messenger, MSN, AOL, etc..) when I wanted to chat with those friends from those networks. Then I tried the many multi-protocol clients too...and in the early years they really sucked so I went back to using the dedicated clients.

I'm still torn...so I used Digsby because it has the most plugable, and still use individual clients when i need to get in conteact that way. I have a couple blog posts about this too.

I used to be plugged in to IM, AIM, yahoo, msn, icq, trillian. I just ended up turning the damn thing off because it would prevent me from getting things done while i was online. Not sure, I might consider installing it. I dunno.

I have been using IM since at at least 1995, started off with a company I don't even remember their name that was pre AOL. Then with AOL started chatting there, moved on to IRC channels, microsoft, ICQ, and gtalk. Used to send 6+ hours IMing on AOL and IRC, parents couldn't use the phone.
